Laser Therapy in Physical Therapy and Hand Therapy
North Boulder Physical Therapy Sports Rehabilitation
In keeping with our philosophy of offering the latest technology for treatment, we have purchased a laser for use at each of our offices. We performed trial laser treatments in early 2014 with our patients. The patients asked for the laser on their next visits because they were pleased with the decreased pain and improved mobility provided when the laser was used in the same treatment day with manual therapy or exercise. The therapists now regard the laser as a valuable modality for tissue healing.
A laser works by photonic (light) energy absorption by chromophores (cytochrome c), which are organelles inside the mitochondria. The Cytochrome C gets excited by the light and produces ATP which is a form of energy that runs our bodies. The ATP then fuels physiological responses resulting in improved normal cell function. The body uses the ATP energy to absorb nutrients, excrete toxins and repair cell tissue.
Lasers are cleared by the FDA for:
- Muscle spasm
- Relieving muscle stiffness
- Promoting muscle relaxation
- Temporary increase in blood flow
