What do physical therapists do?
Our physical therapists are trained to evaluate and treat musculoskeletal problems, specifically to improve movement and function, and relieve pain. Physical therapy can help you where pain impairs function, for example, in recovering from an injury or surgery, as well as in recovering from a disease or illness. Physical therapists also train you in important adaptive and physical coping skills so you can better handle an impaired function from a disease, injury or illness.
How many treatments will I need?
One of the most common questions about physical therapy, the extent of treatment needed is hard to pinpoint. Every physical therapy treatment plan is individualized according to your exact needs. Generally speaking, you might need between six to ten treatments, but it varies widely. Once you meet with one of our physical therapists, they’ll complete an evaluation to determine the best course of action for your particular issue or ailment.
Do I get to choose which physical therapist I go to?
There may be some restrictions depending on your insurance, but generally, you can choose the physical therapist you wish to see. It’s really a partnership in your health, so it’s important that you feel comfortable with the physical therapist and the practice. Let your doctor or insurance company know which physical therapist you are interested in. Your doctor may have some suggestions based on your needs and his experience with the therapist’s work.
What kind of insurance do you take?
We accept a wide variety of insurance carriers, including Medicare. If yours is not shown on our insurance list, please feel free to contact us with your insurance information and our office manager will look into it for you. When you schedule your first appointment, we will call your insurance and verify that we are in their network and verify your physical therapy benefits.
Does physical therapy help back pain?
Yes, it can help back pain by controlling the swelling and through therapeutic exercises.
Will physical therapy help me heal faster from orthopedic surgery?
Yes. It can help reduce the swelling, increase your active and passive range of motion and increase strength and endurance. It will help to increase the functioning your muscles, bones, and other soft tissues more quickly and effectively. Physical therapy can be intrinsic for your post-operative rehabilitation.
What do I wear during treatments?
We always suggest that you wear the type of comfortable clothes and shoes you would wear to exercise in. It is best if the area we are treating is exposed. For example, if your knee needs treatment, shorts might be the best thing to wear. If it’s not possible, then wear loose fitting clothes so you can expose the area. Sometimes you might have to wear a gown, depending on the location of your pain or problem.
What happens during my physical therapy treatments?
At first, there will be an initial evaluation and then we will develop a treatment plan. We will use a variety of therapies to help you manage and care for your symptoms, including reduce pain, increase mobility and strength, and restore function. Your physical therapy may include manual therapy which consists of a variety of hands-on joint and soft tissue treatment techniques, exercise techniques, and pain reducing modalities like ice, ultrasound, electrical stimulation, traction, and others. You will probably also be involved in an exercise program.
